Florence

Florence, one of the places where art and architecture flourished most, has an incredible artistic heritage, witness to its century-old history. Cimabue and Giotto, the fathers of Italian painting, lived here, as did Arnolfo and Andrea Pisano, the reformists of architecture and sculpture, Brunelleschi, Donatello and Masaccio, the founders of the Renaissance, and the out and out geniuses Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. It was in Florence, thanks to Dante, that the Italian language originated; literature established a place for itself here with Petrarch and Boccaccio; they relived the ideals of Humanism and with Machiavelli modern political science originated, as did historic prose with Guicciardini and modern experimental science with Galileo. It was here that Boccaccio wrote the 'Decameron'. Florence is also a city full of buildings of incomparable beauty. Its chapels, galleries and museums are a real treasure. The most famous museum is the Uffizi which contains works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian and Rubens. Other marvellous art museums are the Pitti Palace, Galleria dell'Accademia and Palazzo Vecchio. Florence is also the home of some of the biggest churches in Italy, among which the famous Cathedral of Florence, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. A 30-minute drive or quick trip on the convenient bus service will take you to the centre of the Renaissance city par excellence.

Siena

Surrounded by the olives and vines of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany. Rising up on the crest of three hills, it is run through by wide avenues and narrow alleys leading to the heart of the city, Piazza del Campo, and to all the other buildings of cultural appeal such as the Cathedral and the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala. Famous for its Palio, the historic horse race, Siena is also the seat of one of the oldest universities in Europe. With the matchless charm of its interwoven narrow streets, dotted with towers and austere palaces, Siena has preserved its medieval heart, surrounded by the mighty city walls. The calm and tranquillity of this ancient walled city will certainly captivate you … not to speak of the excellent cuisine and delicious Siennese desserts. Don't miss a visit to the Enoteca Italiana.

San Gimignano

The town of a hundred towers is a stop not to be missed for anyone in the area. It was the site of a small Etruscan village in the Hellenistic period (III-II century BC) but its history began around the X century when it took the name of the Saint who was Bishop of Modena: San Gimignano, who was to save the town from the Barbarian hordes. It expanded considerably during the middle ages thanks to the Via Francigena which runs through it. Among the visitors to this marvellous town was the famous poet Dante Alighieri, the ambassador of the Guelf league in Tuscany. The terrible plague of 1348 and subsequent depopulation threw San Gimignano into a severe crisis. The decline and abandonment of the following centuries were only left behind when the beauty of the town, its cultural importance and original agricultural identity were rediscovered. Highly appealing, it is set in a wonderful area of countryside which never fails to conquer those who visit it.
